Many of you will recognise this as Sugar Loaf. The communications tower on the top of Sugar Loaf hill is a bit of an icon in Christchurch. I’ve lived in the south or south west of the city since moving here 13 years ago so it’s always served as a bit of a beacon. I used to run through the port hills and along the summit road and depending on the direction you were running it either meant you were about to start the downhill or you were about to run up a giant hill – or it usually seemed that way at the time.
The fire that raged through the port hills a few weeks ago came dangerously close to destroying the communications tower. If that had happened, not only would Christchurch have lost television and radio services, but we would have lost that icon, that beacon.
Christchurch has been through so much in the last 6 years, but still it thrives. This is not the greatest photo, and one day I will go and take a better photo of sugar loaf. But to me it demonstrates that Christchurch is a city that has not only survived adversity – but is thriving in spite of it.
When adversity strikes, that’s when you have to be the most calm. Take a step back, stay strong, stay grounded and press on. – LL Cool J
